why i started an event series
and this month's free sound bath on catchup x
This was my face when I stepped off the mic after my set at warm mids afternoon on Sunday.
It’s Thursday now and I’m still beaming.
When I conceived the warm mids afternoon concept a few years ago, this was what I imagined. An afternoon of dreamy music, performed by friends, who all worked to make the day happen. Together. A collaboration. Between the performers and the audience.
It’s a bloody hard slog though. A lot of effort goes into running something like this.
So why did I do it?
I wanted to create a space for people to experience ambient, neoclassical and other dreamy music in an accessible way. In the afternoon. Lying down if they chose to. Snuggled up under a blanket. Making beadwork items. Or practicing their Japanese characters. Or simply lying down and soaking it all in.
I wanted to make something that was somewhere between a sound bath and a gig.
I think these photos say it all.

I know I speak for all four performers (Nat Bartsch, Matt Wicking, Paul Raine and me) who were lucky enough to grace the stage of the Oratory at Abbotsford Convent, when I say that it was one of the most beautiful groups I’ve ever been lucky enough to make music for. Looking out to the crowd, eyes closed, some lying down, some sitting up - all 100% present and soaking up the sounds in their own way… It was magic. And just what the world needs right now.
My favourite quote from the day came from an audience member who told me:
“I feel like I’ve been underneath a weighted blanket for an hour”
YES.
Me too. Between the running around, I managed to enjoy parts of Matt and Paul’s, and Nat’s sets. And my experience was pure transcendence. Joy. Gratitude. And moments of sheer, unadulterated beauty.
If you went, I’d love to hear what your experience of the day was - and if you have any suggestions for the next one. Yes. I know I forgot the plants this time. Sorry.
It would be remiss of me not to include a video of the final song in Nat’s set, where she invited us all on stage to join her for an impromptu jam. This is what this event is all about. Collaboration and connection. Between the performers and the audience.
Long may it continue.
The next event is happening on Sunday 31 May and features my co-collaborator on the series, Ruby Ester Mae Clariloops, alongside long time buddy Willebrant and your new fav Bladerunner Folk duo (also my BFF Lucy’s band) My lovely haunting. I won’t be performing, but I’ll sure as heck be there as a punter - with a blanket, cushions and a thermos of tea - hope you can make it too. Tickets will be onsale soon and the first place you’ll hear about it (and the other gigs we have planned for 2026) is on the warm mids mailing list.
Come and enjoy music in a very, very different way. You’ll never go back.
meanwhile…
